Postdoctoral Position in ‘Wheat Comparative Genomics’

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology: Postdoc Positions:

Biological and Environmental Science and Engineering Division (postdoc)

          Thuwal, Saudi Arabia

          Open Date

          Dec 13, 2022

We are looking for a creative, self-motivating, and enthusiastic early career scientist to join the Cereal Genetics and Genomics group (Prof. Simon Krattinger - https: // cerealgenomics.kaust.edu.sa/) at KAUST. Our group combines innovative approaches in genomics and molecular biology to understand wheat genome biology and evolution. Our mission is to contribute to curiosity- driven research of high impact as well as to translate basic science into better crops.

Project Bread wheat has become one of the most widely cultivated crop species globally. In addition to hexaploid bread wheat, multiple ‘minor' wheat species of historic and regional importance are cultivated. This project focuses on the comparative genomics of several minor wheat species. The goal is to create a more comprehensive picture of wheat evolution, with a particular focus on polyploidization and chromosome structure. The results of this curiosity- driven research will inform wheat improvement by making untapped genetic diversity accessible to genomics-assisted breeding.

Offer We offer a competitive, dynamic, international, and team-oriented scientific environment in a young research group at a young university. In particular, this position offers to work at the interface of genome biology and breeding. We offer a highly competitive salary, free housing and subsidized medical insurance. For more information about living and working at KAUST, please refer to the University website: https: // www. kaust.edu.sa/en/live

Contact For questions relating to the position, kindly contact Prof. Simon Krattinger, simon.krattinger@kaust.edu.sa. Send your application as single PDF-file by e-mail. Applications should include a CV and full publication list, a statement of research interests not exceeding one page, and three academic references. For full consideration, please submit your application by February 28th, 2023. The position remains open until filled. The position is for one year initially, with the possibility of extension for another two years.

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) advances science and technology through distinctive and collaborative research integrated with graduate education. Located on the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia, KAUST conducts curiosity-driven and goal-oriented research to address global challenges related to food, water, energy, and the environment.

The Center for Desert Agriculture is committed to finding smart and efficient solutions to produce high value crops and staples that will require less water, fertilizer, and pesticides; can grow on marginal lands; and have reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Through education and outreach, we are empowering the next generation of global leaders in sustainable agriculture.

Requirements We are seeking an early career scientist with a PhD degree in plant genomics, bioinformatics, or a related discipline. Applicants must demonstrate a strong background in computational biology, including experience in using the latest DNA sequencing technologies, genome assembly, comparative analyses of large and complex genomes, and population genomics. Experience in working in a high- performance computing (HPC) environment and chromosome biology (e.g., FISH/GISH) are of advantage. We are looking for a creative and self- motivating personality with excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
